Privacy policy
On this page
We keep the Wagtail user guide as simple as possible, and we collect as little as we can to keep it running and improve it.
The site is part of the Wagtail open source project, which is maintained by the Wagtail core team. The site is hosted and managed by Torchbox, who handle the site’s infrastructure on the project’s behalf. Torchbox has its own privacy policy for the work it does.
What we collect
Information provided by users
We collect two kinds of information:
- Feedback from our users, as comments provided via each page’s Feedback form. This is deleted periodically.
- Search queries within the site’s search, preserved in server logs.
Information collected automatically
Whenever you visit any website, some technical information is sent along with your request, such as your IP address, the type of browser you use, and the pages you visit. We use this information from HTTP logs in two ways:
- To run the site efficiently and securely. Requests are served through Cloudflare, which caches pages and filters out malicious traffic.
- To investigate problems. If the site throws an error, we send details of the error to Sentry, our error monitoring service. These reports help us fix bugs, and may include technical details about the page that failed.
We don’t run any analytics trackers in your browser.
Cookies and browser storage
The site only uses cookies for essential functionality:
- csrftoken protects the feedback form from being submitted by another website on your behalf.
- sessionid is is used by the people who edit the site’s contents in the CMS.
The site also saves one preference in your browser’s local storage: whether you chose the light or dark theme. That preference stays on your device. We never see it.
Who we share information with
We occasionally share public excerpts of the site’s HTTP logs so our contributors can improve the site, and better understand how people use Wagtail. As part of running the site, the following services also process information:
- Cloudflare caches pages and protects the site from malicious traffic.
- Heroku hosts the application and its database in Europe (Dublin, Ireland).
- Amazon Web Services stores the site’s images and documents.
- Sentry receives error reports, so we can find and fix problems.
- Papertrail receives the site’s logs, which we keep for historical analysis.
